Shell Aviation Technical Services

The Shell Aviation Technical Services Newsletter is back! In this edition we share how a Shell TSA agreement delivers you benefits like fully digitising fuel operations, improving electronic water sensor accuracy, and enabling safety by design.

What's New

See How Digitisation Unlocks Optimal Fuel Management Operations

You may have heard that Shell Aviation Technical Services and Consultancy (Shell Aviation TSA) is collaborating with i6-Group to digitise fuel management operations for Shell Aviation TSA Rewards Programme members. It’s about more than just getting the Next New Thing; it’ll enable our clients to get planes topped off and in the air efficiently and effectively.

Digitisation enables tangible benefits such as:

Better fuel stock management

Through digitisation upgrades, Menzies Aviation at London Heathrow Airport was able to better plan and allocate fuel orders.

Faster refueling

Using such a system, North Air Manchester Airport saw a 92% reduction in fueling delays.

Safer refueling

Digitisation enabled full remote visibility of all ground refueling and service order operations for Riga International Airport and Ireland's international airports.

The digitisation rollout will take place over the next two years at more than 70 of the world's busiest airports, including Dubai International, Manchester, London, Stansted, Birmingham, and Singapore Changi, just to name a few.

All Shell Aviation customers with an existing Technical Services agreement are welcome to join the Rewards Programme and access our new digitisation tools.

Talk to your Technical Services Consultant today to learn more about how and when you can leverage fuel management digitisation through the programme.

Technical Update

An Electronic Water Sensor Fix Enables Optimal Accuracy

Have you been getting warnings and alarms from your electronic water sensors? Genuinely “wet” fuel may not be to blame after all. As we rolled out the new sensors, we discovered that false alarms were sometimes triggered by DDO Dirt Defence Filters retaining and releasing water at low flow rates.

At a flow rate below 60% of the maximum achievable flow rate, water is retained in the DDO element, which is released either as the flow rate increases or as the filter media becomes more saturated.

To avoid false alarms, follow these tips:

Check your flow rates

Compare maximum operating flow rates to the vessel design flow rate. If necessary, remove excess elements and install blanks.

Aim high with your vessel rating

Try for a vessel rating of about 10-20% above the maximum operating flow rate.

Hit a high flow rate daily

Lower flow rates are normal and acceptable. However, it’s important to achieve the maximum flow rate periodically – ideally, every day.

Air bubbles can also trigger alarms. For more on related scenarios and solutions, download our technical update sheet and calibrate your electronic water sensors for optimal accuracy.
